
Road accidents in Bengaluru: 893 people killed in 2024

Bengaluru police report decrease in road accidents, with efforts leading to reduction in fatalities and pedestrian deaths in 2024.
The Bengaluru city police recorded a total of 4,784 road accidents cases in which 893 people were killed and 4,052 people were injured in 2024.
According to the statistics released by the traffic police, the number of accidents have declined by 3.9% compared to the last year. “The efforts made by BTP and all stakeholders towards improving road safety in 2024 has resulted in the reduction of fatal accidents by 1.26% in deaths due to accidents and by 1.90% in non-fatal accidents, taking the overall reduction to 3.97% in the total number of accidents compared to 2023,” officials said.
A total of 2,575 people were killed and 11,432 people were injured in road accidents reported in the city in the last three years.
However, there was an increase in the number of self-accidents by 3.34% in 2024 with 210 accident cases where 212 people were killed, compared to 203 fatal accidents reported with 209 deaths in the year 2023.
“In 2024, concrete measures were taken to identify and rectify black-spots in Bengaluru city particularly those pertaining to pedestrian accidents. The efforts have paid off and there has been a significant reduction in pedestrian deaths in 2024, with a reduction of 23.17% compared to 2023. A total number of 233 pedestrians were killed compared to 287 pedestrians deaths out of 284 cases reported in 2023,” the police added.
Using contact and contactless enforcement measures, the traffic police booked 82.8 lakh cases related to traffic violations and collected a fine of ₹80.9 crore in 2024. This includes registration of 23,574 drink-and-drive cases and licenses of violators seized for suspension.
A total of 513 drunk drivers were caught in a special drive conducted on Tuesday (December 31, 2024) night.
