Hong Kong's democracy movement was about hope. These protests are driven by desperation

Hong Kong (CNN)Outside Hong Kong's legislature, which protesters stormed and partially sacked Monday, a large red banner read: "If we burn, you burn with us." It encapsulated the feeling of the protest and how far the mood has shifted since the optimism of the 2014 Umbrella Movement, when Hong Kong protesters were lauded worldwide for being peaceful and respectful. During those protests, there was a real sense that true change was possible, that the city's long demand of democracy was on the verge of being met.
